saw the new monster hunters season opener. fell asleep the first time I watched it and missed the ending. watched it again and was very disappointed. more like death of the 2 hours I wasted watching and re-watching this rehashed non-conclusive snore fest. its been about 75 years that they have been dragging the loch with very little to show for it. I guess I just want to warn everyone before the get all excited like I did and watch it.

The Montauk Monster and the best cryptids of all-time

By now, you're certainly have had nightmares about the Montauk Monster story that Gawker broke on Tuesday. Is it a turtle missing its shell? A dog thrown in the ocean by its evil owner? A nutria? A viral marketing campaign for Cloverfield 2? Someone call a cryptozoologist, on the double.

This isn't the first monster to grip our collective consciousness -- there's Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Chupacabra -- but these are certainly not the only famous cryptids.

• Jersey Devil -- Ever wondered where the NHL's New Jersey Devils get their name from? This creature reportedly has a long, slender neck, hooves, and wings, with its height ranging from three to seven feet. Back in the 19th century the devil was blamed for the killing of livestock. More recently, the creature popped up in an episode of The X-Files.

• Jackalope -- Part rabbit, part antelope, all trouble. It lost all its mystique when it was repeatedly featured on the very unfunny America's Funniest People -- and named Jack Ching Bada-Bing -- in the early 1990s. Thanks Dave Coulier.

• The Mothman -- A large, moth-like creature that was spotted in West Virginia in the late 1960s. Richard Gere can't be wrong.

• Goatman -- A half man-half goat creature first spotted in Maryland in the late 1950s. Since then, there have been sightings as far south as Florida and as far north as Ontario.

• Dropa -- A race of mini-aliens said to be discovered in China in 1938.

• Mokèlé-mbèmbé -- The African equivalent to the Loch Ness Monster. A dinosaur the size of a small elephant, there have been several expeditions -- right up until this year -- to try and locate it.

• The Beast of Bray Road -- The first sightings of this werewolf-like creature were in Wisconsin in the 1980s. After a spate of sightings, one local reporter wrote a book about the beast.

The little known Indian version of this legendary ape-like creature is called mande barung - or forest man - and is reputed to live in the remote West Garo hills of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

Conference brings out dedicated UFO hunters

Conference brings out dedicated UFO hunters

By Vimal Patel
Denver Post Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 07/22/2007 12:25:09 AM MDT

Chuck Zukowski said he is used to skeptics deriding his belief in UFOs as silly escapism, but that's OK.

"There's more physical evidence that UFOs exist than there's physical evidence that Jesus Christ existed," the Colorado Springs resident and reserve sheriff's deputy said.

Zukowski was one of about 70 people, ranging from college students to retired professionals, who flocked to the Tivoli Student Center at the Auraria Campus on Saturday to talk about evidence of unidentified flying objects and convince skeptics.

No bug-eyed costumes with dangling Slinkys were in sight at the annual Colorado UFO Briefing. It was serious business.

"The evidence is simply overwhelming," said James Carrion, international director of the Mutual UFO Network, a national group that studies sightings.

Carrion used to flip through his mom's National Enquirer magazines when he was 11, sparking his interest in the topic. At that time, the tabloid actually used to hire real investigators to dig for information, he said.

The 38-year-old network is the world's largest UFO investigative group, with 2,500 members and 800 field investigators, Carrion said. Devouring thick books and attending seminars is a requirement to become a certified investigator.

Jefferson County resident Rick Nelson said he once saw three barrel-shaped objects fluttering in the sky over Arvada. One of the shimmering gold and copper things was about one-quarter mile away before it shot to the sky and out of sight, he said.

"Anyone who spends time researching it can't dismiss it," he said.

Colorado has a disproportionately high number of UFO sightings - about 5 to 12 a month out of a national 150, according to the Bellvue-based group.

It's unclear why, said Alejandro Rojas, the group's education director.

"We have a lot of cutting-edge (air) defense going on here," he said, explaining part of the sightings spike.

An annual UFO conference is set for Aug. 10-12 at the Denver Tech Center Marriott, where the negatives of McMinnville, Ore., UFO photos - pictures declared authentic by a group of University of Colorado scientists - will be shown to the public for the first time, Carrion said.

Italian Unicorn

http://www.newser.com/story/29782.html

[ picture at above link ]

A deer with a single horn in the center of its head has been spotted in an Italian nature preserve, triggering speculation that such anomalies may have helped give rise to unicorn myths, the AP reports. Experts say the year-old deer, born in captivity and nicknamed “Unicorn,” likely has a genetic flaw or experienced trauma early in its life.

Though single-horned deer are unusual but not unheard-of, the horn's central position is rare. "This is fantasy becoming reality," said a park official at Italy's Center of Natural Sciences in Prato. "This shows that even in past times, there could have been animals with this anomaly. It's not like they dreamed it up."

a rare bat species could explain it all

Bats account for 20% of mammal species.

But how often do you see one, and how many kinds can you name?

So, if you look at what's common here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampires
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Heeled_Jack
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=india+monkey+man+attack&btnG=Google+Search
(there are more, the more you look)

There's a lot in common.

Taken collectively, what emerges is basically a really large, very shy bat (or glider) that prefers to drink blood from large sleeping mammals.

As human settlement expanded, the normal blood source animals were probably hunted out and replaced with smaller livestock species.
This and changes to weather and other factors may have brought the bats hesitantly into direct contact with humans. There are probably a few rare or extinct megafauna yet to be discovered, considering the rate at which we have been able to document the recent demise of mastadons, moas, stegadons, etc. As long as we feel we shouldn't be shocked by things like the tiny hominins of Flores or the half-rat-half-squirrel thing they found in western China, a really big vampire bat shouldn't be out of the question.

I expect that the domed head mistaken for a helmet or bare skull would be useful to an oversized bat due to the greater hazards of falling,
which could also explain why leaping may be observed more often than actual flight. The glowing red eyes are what we see on many night-time predators when they are illuminated. There may be a whitish underbelly and possibly a marsupial pouch, consistent with the described abdominal bloating sometimes described, and also with the look of some marsupial noses that have a split more conspicuous than the nostrils (may look like one nostril).

If the creature is generally unaggressive, it may prefer to strike with the backs of its claws, which would otherwise be used for climbing or clinging; back-swats won't kill animals they may want to feed on later, and won't kill others of their own kind or animals easily confused with their own kind, such as large primates.

Fur on the back may appear spiky, and standing on two clawed toes may look like cloven hooves or raised heels.
A glider design could explain the irregularity of possible cape/wing descriptions and would fit with the marsupial idea.

I have also begun to wonder whether the Lithuanian Plague could have been in some way related either to a disease spread by these critters, by people being bitten in their sleep and injected with paralyzing/anticoagulant chemicals, and/or by humans consuming milk/meat/blood of animals injected with such chemicals. The livestock could either become resistant, or there could be another mechanism, such as movement of the chemical to concentration in the liver/kidneys. Known strains of vampire bats have anticoagulant saliva, and the platypus actually produces venom, so it's not a big stretch for me to think that a large mammal could produce something like what leeches or mosquitoes produce. Victims could appear dead, but 'pink and plump', either recovering after a few days or not.
(In order to avoid burying them alive, drive a spike through the heart and/or decapitate them first)

Consider...

1) elongated chin/ horse or doglike head/face with domed/egg-shaped top

2) comparisons to kangaroo in manner of movement

3)' bloating' (in comparison to human shape)

4) possible ruddiness or red hair, otherwise, dark back, light front

5) does not tend to stand on its heels

6) long nails or claws; 'cold', as would be consistent with hard, thick nail material used for climbing or hanging or digging, does not normally scratch.

7) drinks blood- apparently preferring livestock, which are normally not killed, but may be paralyzed or sedated

8) does not speak (important to Spring Heeled Jack and Monkey Man reports), but has a human-sounding call which sounds like laughing or sobbing (see also La Llorona if you care)

9) reacts to mirrors much as would any shy wild animal to seeing its reflection for the first time

10) may be confused or discouraged by hanging of some aromatic plants

11) seems to 'teleport' or 'walk through walls', possibly passing easily through very small windows, as probably would any elusive cave-dweller or something that sleeps in a hollow tree. Comparatively large brain size and long lifespan might facilitate it in finding
unobvious routes into barns and houses to feed, as well as cemetery crypts (to sleep during the day).

12) may at times produce froth or vapor from the mouth

New Zealand's "living dinosaur" the tuatara

Copied&Pasted from:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080320120708.htm

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2008) — In a study of New Zealand's "living dinosaur" the tuatara, evolutionary biologist, and ancient DNA expert, Professor David Lambert and his team from the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution recovered DNA sequences from the bones of ancient tuatara, which are up to 8000 years old. They found that, although tuatara have remained largely physically unchanged over very long periods of evolution, they are evolving - at a DNA level - faster than any other animal yet examined.
"What we found is that the tuatara has the highest molecular evolutionary rate that anyone has measured," Professor Lambert says.
The rate of evolution for Adélie penguins, which Professor Lambert and his team have studied in the Antarctic for many years, is slightly slower than that of the tuatara. The tuatara rate is significantly faster than for animals including the cave bear, lion, ox and horse.
"Of course we would have expected that the tuatara, which does everything slowly -- they grow slowly, reproduce slowly and have a very slow metabolism -- would have evolved slowly. In fact, at the DNA level, they evolve extremely quickly, which supports a hypothesis proposed by the evolutionary biologist Allan Wilson, who suggested that the rate of molecular evolution was uncoupled from the rate of morphological evolution."
Allan Wilson was a pioneer of molecular evolution. His ideas were controversial when introduced 40 years ago, but this new research supports them.
Professor Lambert says the finding will be helpful in terms of future study and conservation of the tuatara, and the team now hopes to extend the work to look at the evolution of other animal species.
"We want to go on and measure the rate of molecular evolution for humans, as well as doing more work with moa and Antarctic fish to see if rates of DNA change are uncoupled in these species. There are human mummies in the Andes and some very good samples in Siberia where we have some collaborators, so we are hopeful we will be able to measure the rate of human evolution in these animals too."
The tuatara, Sphendon punctatus, is found only in New Zealand and is the only surviving member of a distinct reptilian order Sphehodontia that lived alongside early dinosaurs and separated from other reptiles 200 million years ago in the Upper Triassic period.

New Loch Ness Monster video

Story Highlights• An amateur scientist has captured new video footage of the Loch Ness Monster
• "Nessie" was first captured on video in the 1930s
• There have been more than 4,000 purported sightings since then
Adjust font size:
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) -- Like tartan, bagpipes, and shortbread Scotland's Loch Ness Monster is as much an emblem as a tourist draw.

And now Nessie's back.

An amateur scientist has captured what Loch Ness Monster watchers say is among the finest footage ever taken of the elusive mythical creature reputed to swim beneath the waters of Scotland's most mysterious lake.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this jet black thing, about 45-feet (15 meters) long, moving fairly fast in the water," said Gordon Holmes, the 55-year-old a lab technician from Shipley, Yorkshire, who took the video this past Saturday.

He said it moved at about 6 mph (10 kph) and kept a fairly straight course.

"My initial thought is it could be a very big eel, they have serpent-like features and they may explain all the sightings in Loch Ness over the years."

Loch Ness is surrounded by myth and mystery, as it is the largest and deepest inland expanse of water in Britain. About 750 feet (230 meters) to the bottom, it's even deeper than the North Sea.

Nessie watcher and marine biologist Adrian Shine of the Loch Ness 2000 center in Drumnadrochit, on the shores of the lake, viewed the video and hopes to properly analyze it in the coming months.

"I see myself as a skeptical interpreter of what happens in the loch, but I do keep an open mind about these things and there is no doubt this is some of the best footage I have seen," Shine said.

He said the video is particularly useful because Holmes panned back to get the background shore into the shot. That means it was less likely to be a fake and provided geographical bearings allowing one to calculate how big the creature was and how fast it was traveling.

While many sightings can be attributed to a drop of the local whisky, legends of Scottish monsters date back to one of the founders of the Christian church in Scotland, St. Columba, who wrote of them in about 565 A.D.

More recently, there have been more than 4,000 purported Nessie sightings since she was first caught on camera by a surgeon on vacation in the 1930s.

Since then, the faithful have speculated whether it is a completely unknown species, a sturgeon -- even though they have not been native to Scotland's waters for many years -- or even a last surviving dinosaur.

Shine doubts that last explanation.

"There are a number of possible explanations to the sightings in the loch. It could be some biological creature, it could just be the waves of the loch or it could be some psychological phenomenon in as much as we see what we want to see," he said.

But Nessie isn't just an icon of the paranormal -- she's also an emblem of Scottish tourism. She has been the muse for cuddly toys and immortalized on T-shirts and posters showing her classic three-humped image.

The Scottish media is skeptical of Nessie stories but Holmes' footage is of such good quality that even the normally reticent BBC Scotland aired the video on its main news program on Tuesday.

Dan Baines who designs illusions for magicians built a model of a mummified fairy as an April Fools Day prank.

After posting photos to a web sight he received 20,000 hits a day from true believers including some warnings he was in danger for violating the fairies grave.

After exposing the hoax he continued to receive emails from believers who felt that the hoax story was itself a hoax.

Posted by: Loren Coleman on March 29th, 2007

"Enclosed here are some photos related to the latest footprint discovered in Felda Semenchu. I went to visit the location last month, and managed to find out that there are three eyewitness who have seen the “Bigfoot”. The two persons that I have interviewed are Shahrul (light blue t-shirt) and Raslan (shirt with marine fish).

Shahrul, who is a guard has described the creature as hairy, and very large (around 3 meters) but he couldn’t see his face properly. He also mentioned that the creature has a loud breathing sound, and having a stooping posture. On the other hand Raslan with another friend has seen the creature crouching under a palm tree and describe the face as looking like an ape, and has red fiery eyes."

This site is quite interesting as there were footprints, and two independent sightings happening around the same time, thus giving more credibility to the incident...

"Hundreds of people have now streamed through a home in northern Manitoba to view a 2-minute 49-second video that has folks believing: Bigfoot lives.

Missy Flett, a self-described cynic, said she was stunned by the image of a massive hair-covered creature walking upright calf-deep in water along a shore of the Nelson River, about 500 kilometres north of Winnipeg."

I switched on the news today & heard the end of a newscast about an undiscovered carnivore found in Borneo, and that if confirmed, it would be the first since 1853 or something. Can anyone fill in the blanks? The screen showed an animal that looked something like a trylacine ( aka Tasmanian Devil) but with reddish fur and bushy prehensil-looking tail?!

i got this from a birdlist on which i am. heh.

i dont know where it came from before then.

associated press from canada, but why.

the mystery deepens. madison is -not- that close to ca.

********

DODGEVILLE, Wis. (AP) - A kangaroo that went on a walkabout in frigid Wisconsin was captured Wednesday. But where the marsupial came from remained a mystery.
Sheriff's deputies cornered the 68-kilogram kangaroo in a barn after receiving calls for days from shocked residents who had seen it.
Officials from Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, about 70 kilometres away, planned to pick it up and take care of it.
Zoo director Jim Hubing said the kangaroo would not have survived long in the Wisconsin winter. Temperatures in the animal's native Australia generally do not drop below freezing.
Sheriff Steve Michek said some people who spotted the kangaroo were hesitant to report it "because they didn't want to be made a fool of."
He said the animal might have escaped as someone was bringing it through the county.

Thisw is a thread which I posted on the Nepal Travel Tribe:

Ive been to Nepal a couple of times myself, last visit was in 2003. I posted this thread after reading through my diary of my last trip. I spent one night in a teahouse in Junbesi in the Solu Region. On this night I talked with the owners of the teahouse about many topics, late on that evening we were joined by one of their elderly relatives who listened in to our conversation, when the ownwers went to bed I continued talking with this elderly man and we got onto the subject of the Yeti. It was his belief and in fact his family/tribe belief that about 300 years ago there where Yetis living in the Solu region, for those that dont know the Solu Regions are the foothills on the way to the Everest region, this I belive would tie into the time when Sherpa people first settled as opposed to being nomads. The reason Sherpa people settled was the introduction of the Potato, which made it possible to eek out an existance in this region. It was this mans belief that they had displaced the Yeti. Of course this is just a story that was told to me and proves absolutley nothing, although Im glad that this version of history was told to me in person.

I am looking for people who have ideas for a show themed to bigfoot, giant salamanders, mothman, dover demon, bell cave witch, charman, the billiwick monster,....things like that.

I want to steer clear of rock bands and go towards video shorts, interesting visual stage things, etc....

Any takers or ideas????

It is 2005, videocameras have anti vibration settings on them. Cameras have auto focus. WTF? If you are going to make a hoax, WORK ON IT! get it right , then film it. Instead we all have to search through endless hours of someones version of an epileptic video fit! I am not really saying that I want to see good hoaxes, on the contrary, I am just tired of all the hooplah sourounding a video and then after sitting through it, only getting a glimps of something.

!!!!!!!!! If you see something, film it, dont dance, stand still, move the camera slowly!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure that someone will respond with the typical, "well, they are excited" comment. I have plenty of film of accidents and exciting events, and none of it is blurry, grainy, or flying all over the place.

So lets put the jackhammer down before we pick up a camera.

I know I sounded like a jerk, but for freak sake, lets get some nice decent steady evidence.

Sunday, 01.30: tv show: "Bigfoot: Is it Real?"

http://www.yakima-herald.com/?storyid=282492032604628
Unreality TV -- Bigfoot show is Sunday

By JANE GARGAS
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

If you're going to walk a mile in his shoes, you'd better have pretty large feet.

That's because Yakima resident Bob Heironimus is once again admitting to being Bigfoot, only this time he's saying it on national TV.

The legend of Bigfoot, one of the most fascinating tales ever linked to Yakima, will be investigated on a National Geographic television special this weekend.

Yakima and Heironimus play starring roles on "Bigfoot: Is it Real?" airing on The National Geographic TV channel at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The one-hour show replays at 9 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday.

The production is part of National Geographic's "Behind the Mysteries" series, which examines enigmas from around the world.

Heironimus made headlines in March when "The Making of Bigfoot" was published. In the book, written by paranormal investigator Greg Long of Mill Creek, Wash., Heironimus said he donned a gorilla costume in 1967 to pose as Bigfoot in a now-famous film clip.

The blurry 60-second segment — considered the most definitive footage in existence of the ape-human creature — has been thoroughly studied by Bigfoot believers and detractors alike.

The original Bigfoot film was shot next to Bluff Creek in the Six Rivers National Forest in northern California by two other Yakima residents, Bob Gimlin and the now-deceased Roger Patterson.

The 1967 Bigfoot production is generally referred to as the Patterson film.

Contacted by telephone Friday, Long said Sunday's show will feature interviews shot in several Yakima locations on Oct. 4 and 5.

According to Long, a National Geographic crew took footage at Willy D's restaurant in Wiley City of Heironimus; Heironimus' friend, Russ Bohannon, a Yakima cattleman; Mike Trammel, a past manager at Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., where Heironimus worked; and Charlotte, N.C.-based costume maker Philip Morris, who says he sold the original gorilla suit to Patterson.

Long said Heironimus' mother, Opal, who lives in Union Gap; John Miller, Heironimus' nephew; and another Heironimus friend, West Valley rancher Jim Falon, were also interviewed for the National Geographic show.

"It's the first time Bob's friends have spoken publicly on camera about Bob's story," said Long.

Former Yakima resident Harvey Anderson was also filmed for Sunday's show. Now retired and living in Kirkland, Wash., he talked about selling a camera to Patterson in the early 1960s at his store, Anderson's Camera and Sport Shop, which was on North Second Street in Yakima.

According to Long, the National Geographic crew re-created the Bluff Creek, Calif., setting to show how the Patterson film could have been made; for that, they chose a cattle camp near Naches.

To tell the Bigfoot believers' side, two men considered credible proponents also were interviewed for the show: Canadian journalist John Green, who has investigated many of the locales where Bigfoot sightings have been reported, and Jeff Melldrum, an Idaho State University anatomy professor, who studies tracks that people believe may have been made by an oversized primate.

But Long argues that Heironimus' story is hard to refute.

"No one has come up with any proof that this man (Heironimus) is lying," he said.

In writing his book, Long spent three years investigating leads in the Yakima area, trying to track down if the Bigfoot footage was real or a hoax.

He says he hit pay dirt when Heironimus confessed he was the hairy creature in the film clip.

During an interview with the Yakima Herald-Republic in October, the 63-year-old Heironimus said, "I kept it quiet for all those years, but it wasn't a secret to most of the people around here."

Although he's utterly convinced that Heironimus is telling the truth about wearing the gorilla suit, Long remains open-minded about the existence of Bigfoot.

"Yes, maybe there is a Bigfoot," he said, "but there isn't one in the (Patterson) film."

Here is a little headline taken from the Onion magazine (www.theonion.com)

Cryptozoologist Falls For It Again
LUBBOCK, TX—Will Reiser, an expert in the field of unsubstantiated creatures, was duped again Tuesday, when he said he'd finally found proof of the existence of the elusive Chupacabra, a quill-covered creature that feasts on the blood of livestock. "The right shank of the goat carcass I discovered on my doorstep bore the Chupacabra's distinctive cross-hatched fang pattern," Reiser said. "I have to say I'm surprised that the quills poking out of the body so closely resemble those of the hedgehog indigenous to this area." Reiser's next-door neighbor, Dan Swelter, is currently laughing his ass off.

Texas Devil Beasts

(There's a picture on the site, though not in color. I'd like to know how blue this animal is.)

Coyotes, imaginations running wild
http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/news/local/10232520.htm?1c

By Bud Kennedy

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

The Texas Devil Beast is stalking South and East Texas again, just in time to give television a news story to replace Scott Peterson's trial and Nicollette Sheridan's towel.

When last we saw the mysterious Devil Beast, he had stirred up a near-panic in suburban San Antonio, where a rancher killed an ugly little hairless blue animal with big eyes, a long nose and fangs.

Wildlife officials called it a sick coyote. But a television station said it might be the famous Chupacabra -- officially El Chupacabras, a legendary fanged, goat-killing monster, sort of the borderland's Bigfoot.

With that single word -- "Chupacabra?" -- the newscast sent crowds mobbing a small-town grocery to see photos.

Now, two more blue creatures have turned up near Lufkin in East Texas. Yet another was seen this week sauntering through a San Antonio neighborhood.

Wildlife officials say they're simply coyotes with a particularly fierce strain of mange. But a cable television crew in San Antonio this week found a British expert to call the animals a new species.

With elections over and sweeps week on, San Antonio newscasts have gone crazy over El Chupacabras.

"I think the others are just trying to get their share of the attention," said Nancy DeLeon of DeLeon Grocery & Market in Elmendorf. Thousands of visitors have studied photos there and bought hundreds of T-shirts stamped "Chupacabra Tour 2004."

"I think the rest are all copycats," she said. She laughed. "They're copy-Chupas."

Whatever Bexar County rancher Devin Mcanally shot and buried in May near Elmendorf is the only genuine Texas Devil Chupa/Beast, she said. The others must be coyotes.

Game wardens say they're all coyotes. As the coyote population goes up, mange cases spread and outbreaks grow more common, said John Young, a Texas Parks and Wildlife mammalogist. It's nature's way of thinning out the species.

"We've all looked at the photos, and there's no question," he said from an Austin office. "It bothers me that news reports keep pushing the sensational side."

The coyotes shed their hair and turn blue from "very severe" mange, he said.

The Chupa/Beast resurfaced last month when one was killed in East Texas at Pollok, near Lufkin. The Lufkin Daily News, joining in the fun, named it the Pollok Mystery Beast. Former Lufkin zookeeper Stacy Womack shot photos of the dead animal.

She's taken the tale to a celestial level.

"I don't think it's an alien," she told WOAI News 4 in San Antonio, your station for 'round-the-clock Chupacabra coverage.

"But I wonder about that spaceship [Columbia] that blew up over here. Something might have come out of it, and caused some type of genetic problem," she said.

A state health official said there's nothing alien about a sick coyote. It only looked weird because of poor nutrition and genetic abnormalities, he said. Dr. James Wright of the Texas Department of State Health Services in Tyler was quoted by the regional Country World News. "The real story here is how excited people got over a coyote with mange," he said.

After the wet summer, coyotes are on the prowl all over Texas. In Austin, Travis County commissioners have hired biologists to manage the population in northwest Austin, where coyotes have been peering into windows and stalking homeowners carrying groceries.

In Houston, coyotes have set up shop in lush Memorial Park. City officials in Galveston and Waco recently launched coyote-control campaigns.

No Chupacabra sightings yet in Fort Worth. But coyotes roam the remote part of Forest Park. Wildlife officials say the same advice applies everywhere: Don't set pet food or water outside. Don't leave cats outside. Lift bird feeders more than 6 feet off the ground. Don't use vegetable-based fertilizers or leave anything else outside.

Don't feed the Chupacabras.

Incident at Loch Ness

Hey there everybody, i recently saw a very interesting documentary about a failed documentary being made about the 'real' Loch Ness monster and why people beleive in obvious hoaxes sometimes. The original planned documentary ran into some difficulties, but the documentary about it is a stunning movie. The director of the intended documentary is none other than Werner Herzog, the acclaimed german director who made Fitzgeraldo, Aguirre the Wrath of God, and many other great and profound movies and documentaries.
The documentary is called "The Incident at Loch Ness" and the official website is www.incidentatlochness.com
however, there is another website about it.. www.truthaboutlochness.com

The film will open in select theaters on September 17, (such as the Nuart in Los Angeles) and later will hopefully go into wider release. Having seen an advance screening of the film, I can highly recommend it.

Windigo

I wrote this 'essay' a while ago for my newsletter -Ancient Whispers.

The name Windigo is derived from the Algonquian root word witiku, meaning "evil spirit" and "cannibal." Pronunciation varies from tribe to tribe, but 'Windigo' is the most common spelling followed by Wendigo. Other variations include: Weedigo, Weeghtako, Weeghteko, Weendago, Weendegoag, Weendigo, Weetego, Wee tee go, Weetigo, Wehndigo, Wehtigo, Wendago, Wendigo, Wenigo, Wentigo, Wentiko, Wetigo, Whit te co, Whittico, Wiendigo, Wihtigo, Wiitiko, Windago, Windagoe, Windagoo, Windego, Wi'ndigo, Windikouk, Wintego, Wintigo, Wi'ntsigo, Wintsigo, Wi'tigo, Witigo, Witiko, Wittako, Wittikka. It has been linked in some cases with Bigfoot or Sasquatch.

According to most legends, Windigo comes as a spirit or hunger in the coldest, harshest winters into the minds of isolated, desperate men. It's not something prone to attacking tribes of people, but tends to go for families or small groups. It is a slow seduction; the man does not wake up one morning and think, OK, I'm going to go eat my family now. Instead, it takes months of subconscious desire for the taste of human flesh coupled with a lack of other prey. Once the victim does succumb however, there is no escape but death. The man will remain a wendigo until it is hunted down by others who become aware of it's existence - usually when the ice and snow have melted and visitors discover the cabin or camp where the wendigo made it's first kill. Some said the Windigo could not be killed, but other stories suggested fire or silver through the heart.

The Algonquians (including Micmac, Montagnais-Naskapi, Algonkin, Ojibwa, Cree, and Blackfoots) believed it could only attack in the winter. Though it was a horrible "disease" for any man, it was thought to be the "worst sickness" to which a shaman could fall. My sources did not elaborate on exactly why that night be, aside from the statement that such possession was brought on by egotistical misuse of their shamanic powers. The Chipewa however thought the windigo was a creature of stone and mud or of ice. Not only did it eat people, but the Chipewa windigo was a sorcerer which could freeze people into trances indefinitely. By the time the European settlers arrived, it had become something of a bedtime ogre to scare children. It might fly down to carry off evildoers or travelers, dragging them by the hair until they caught on fire.

Once the wendigo spirit had succeeded in corrupting its host, it would transform the body of the man into a ten to fifteen foot tall, dazzling white creature with a star in the middle of its forehead. It could also change its shape at will, but is described with enormous teeth in a twisted mouth. Its eyes were beady and sunken, and the windigo possessed superhuman strength and speed, capable of moving faster than the eye could follow. Though the Algonquians believed it to be a forest creature, other tribes thought it could roam through swamps and over prairies as well as woodlands. Mainly thought, it haunted the forests and tundra in an area between the Atlantic Ocean, the Rocky Mountains, and the Arctic Ocean. European settlers considered sight of a wendigo a death omen (like the Bean Sidhe), and someone in the family would invariably die if a person caught sight of one. It was also known to kill with merely a look.

Yeti

I wrote this 'essay' a while ago for my newsletter -Ancient Whispers.

-Yeti-

The yeti or the "abominable snowman" of the Himalayas is a humanoid creature of modern and ancient myth. Its name is raksha in some areas of Nepal, Sanskrit for demon. It, and its cousins throughout the world, have attained the status almost of urban legend.

The Yeti has been documented since the fourth century BC. Like the Sasquatch, the yeti are considered a shy race and most evidence for their existence comes from tracks found rather than actual sightings. The tracks appear to be similar to a bear's hind feet but with four distinct, humanoid toes. The depth of the tracks show the creature is rather heavy, and their average measurements, thirteen by eighteen inches, indicate the extreme height of the creature. Many dismiss its existence pointing to the possibility that footprints found may be the result of snow melting around the real print of a known animal rather than the actual footprint of an unknown creature. Yeti have been described with reddish to grey hair. Though a gentle creature like its Sasquatch cousin, it is capable of causing damage if startled. It also has a terrible scent just like its American cousin. It normally makes a strange ululating or whistling sound, but it may roar if startled. There is a rumor that it is fond of strong drink.

There is some conjecture that it is the descendant of a known species of animal. A race of apes called the gigantophitecus migrated to the Himalayas about 500,000 years ago, possibly giving rise to the yeti stories. Another theory is that the yeti are descendants of the A-o-re people who fled into the Himalayas long ago to escape their enemies.

The national animal of the state of Bhutan, three types of Yeti, a small yehteh, a medium mehteh, and a huge dzuteh have been immortalized in postage stamps. These yeti have also been called the rimi (two and a half meters tall), the nyalmot (four and a half meters tall), and the raksi-bombo (one and a half meters tall). In 1961, the Nepalese government even issued Yeti hunting licences to hunters for $10,000.
